Siro: A Cosmic Tribute in Lighting Design

Unveiling Marta Perla's Award-Winning Lamp Inspired by Sirius

Delving into the celestial-inspired design of Siro, a table lamp by Marta Perla that pays homage to Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. This unique piece, a winner of the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2021, merges art, technology, and design to create a captivating balance of form and function.

The primal human fascination with celestial mechanics and the cosmic connection to earthly life has been a constant source of inspiration across various fields. In the realm of design, this fascination has birthed Siro, a table lamp that mirrors the brightness of Sirius, the most luminous white dwarf star in the sky. The designer, Marta Perla, has ingeniously crafted this lamp to reflect the intimate relationship between man, light, and space, resulting in a piece that radiates prosperity and peace of mind.

Siro stands out in its design, composed of a hemisphere and a disc that unleash a radiant light inward. The lamp, when viewed from the front, appears to consist of two bi-dimensional shapes, creating an illusion of perfect equilibrium. The large diameter is contrasted by a minimal depth, made possible by advanced LED technology. Available in two sizes, the lamp features identical colors of bronze and brass, further enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

The lamp's realization is a testament to the innovative use of technology in design. It provides indirect LED light in metal, with a matt black base and a lens-shaped reflector in painted satin bronze or satin gold glaze aluminium, painted white inside. The components are made by die casting, showcasing the blend of traditional and modern manufacturing techniques.

The design process of Siro began in Rome in September 2018 and concluded in Milan in January 2019. It was exhibited in the Salone del Mobile in April 2019 and the Shanghai Exhibition Center in September 2019. The project was inspired by a study on the circle and its evolution, movements, and infinite declensions in space, reflecting the harmony, hospitality, and warmth symbolized by the round shape in everyday life.

Despite the challenges of respecting the aesthetic and philosophical canons of the Oluce company and using accessible materials and production technologies, the design team successfully created a product that respects the classic rules of interaction. The flow of light can be adjusted via a dimmer, and it does not emit direct light, making it an atmosphere light. The main parts that make up the lamp are three: front disc, semi-spherical cap, and base, with the latter made by die casting.

In conclusion, Siro is a testament to the power of design in interpreting and solving problems while respecting the environment. It is a symbol of good design that reconnects human beings to nature, embodying the belief that design should be understandable, sensitive, and necessary. With its award-winning status, Siro is a shining example of how art, architecture, design, innovation, and technology can come together to create a product that is not only functional but also a piece of art.
